Indications and Dosage
Depressive Illness

- By Mouth (Adults): Initially 50 mg daily, increased in steps of 50 mg at intervals of at least one week if required; maintenance dose is 50 mg daily; maximum dose is 200 mg per day.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

- By Mouth (Adults): Start with 50 mg daily, can be increased in 50 mg increments at weekly intervals; maximum dose is 200 mg per day.
Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder

- By Mouth (Adults): Begin at 25 mg daily for one week, increase to 50 mg daily thereafter, and further increased in 50 mg steps at weekly intervals if required, provided the drug is well-tolerated; maximum dose is 200 mg per day.
Side Effects
- Common or Very Common: Chest pain, depression, gastrointestinal disorders, increased risk of infection, neuromuscular dysfunction, vasodilation.
- Uncommon: Back pain, burping, chills, cold sweat, dysphagia, dyspnoea, ear pain, euphoric mood, hypertension, hypothyroidism, migraine, muscle complaints, muscle weakness, oedema, oral disorders, osteoarthritis, periorbital oedema, respiratory disorders, abnormal sensations, speech disorder, abnormal thinking, thirst.
- Rare or Very Rare: Balanoposthitis, bone disorder, cardiac disorder, coma, conversion disorder, diabetes mellitus, drug dependence, dysphonia, eye disorders, abnormal gait, genital discharge, glaucoma, abnormal hair texture, hepatic disorders, hiccups, hypercholesterolemia, hypoglycemia, injuries, lymphadenopathy, myocardial infarction, neoplasms, oliguria, peripheral ischemia, psychotic disorder, rhabdomyolysis, vision disorders, vulvovaginal atrophy.
- Frequency Not Known: Cerebrovascular insufficiency, gynecomastia, hyperglycemia, leucopenia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, pancreatitis.
Special Considerations
- Breastfeeding: Sertraline is not known to be harmful but consider the risks and benefits of continuing breastfeeding.
- Hepatic Impairment: Avoid in severe impairment; dose adjustments are advised for mild to moderate impairment.
- Treatment Cessation: Gradually reduce the dose over approximately 4 weeks to minimize withdrawal symptoms. In long-term treatment, tapering may extend to 6 months.

- Driving and Skilled Tasks: Patients should be advised on the potential effects of sertraline on driving and performing skilled tasks.
